![]() For those daring enough to try Slicker out in it's early stages hopefully these questions will help you get going. Please remember that Slicker is in pre-alpha stage right now, which means it has not been prepared for end-users yet. If you are comfortable running test code, or just can't wait, feel free to give it a try. General Information What is Slicker? I think you need to read this page. If you still have questions, check out the design drawings and come up with your own explaination. Will it have...? Check the Feature Requests. If you don't see it there and you know other people who would like it, consider submitting it. If you submit a request, consider making a mock-up screenshot like these. Being able to see your idea helps explain it, and helps motivate development! Is it going to be included in KDE? Perhaps. At this point in time it is too early to determine. We have been trying to remain "KDE Standards" compliant to possibly have this happen in the future. Status What's the status? Development is being done on it. Check out the real screenshots to get a taste of where it's at. You could also try running it yourself so you can know first-hand what its capable of. When is the next release? 'When it is ready,' and no sooner or later. We don't have a release plan quite yet, we hope to soon, but we have begun to construct a Roadmap. Installation What do I need to try it? Patience, familiarity with compiling and CVS, and these:
Does it work with my distro? It has been known to work on these systems: How do I install it? Basically you need to download the code from CVS, make it, configure it, compile it, then (as root) install it. Simple, right? Once again, Slicker is in a pre-Alpha stage, so user installation is not a priority yet. Check out Danalien's Install Instructions. You can try following these instructions. But remember, every distribution's installation is different. If it works, great. If not, please be patient with us, as we prepare the first release. I want it to start when I start KDE. How do I do this? Hacker-ish approach: You need to change the line "Exec=kicker" to "Exec=slicker" in panel.desktop. This file should either be located in ~/.kde/share/autostart, or in [KDE-directory]/share/autostart Problems I have a problem with... In general, make sure your code is up-to-date. You can also check the bug list, and forums to see if others are experiencing the same problem. I got it running, but no/few cards show up. First, check to make sure that there are several *.desktop files in "[kde-directory]/share/apps/slicker. If there are, try running "export KDEDIRS=$KDEDIRS:[kde-directory]" before you start Slicker. Why doesn't the system tray work? Do you have Kicker running? If so, then you probably also have its tray running which creates a conflict. To fix this, turn the tray off in Kicker, then restart KDE. Slicker crashes on start up. There is a possibility that the ~/.kde/share/config/slickerrc has an error in it. Check the file for the line "[General] Cards=...". If the number of cards does not equal, or is more than, the number of cards listed in this file, this is a problem. You can manually fix it by adjusting the number accordingly. Development How can I get involved? Install it. Use it. Learn it. Develop it. You may also consider reading the mailing list, so you can see where you might be able to help out. What's up with the colors? The colors are part of the design goal. There is a good possibility that Slicker will be style-able. What font is used on the web page? BubbleBoy2, which is available at www.1001fonts.com. The title graphics are sized 16, bold, color #D0D0DA, with a drop shadow colored #7F7F7F with a Gaussian Blur with Radius 1, with a background colored #F9FAFE. Finally What if I still have a question? Make sure you have checked the following two places: first, the website (duh!), there really is more here than you may think; second, never underestimate the power of Google. If you've exhausted these sources check through the Forums and Mailing List Archives. If you know others who have had the same question (answered or unanswered), let me(kaosconman at users.sourceforge.net) know. |
